Dentistry
Dentistry is an essential part of the health care of your horse. Your horse, pony, or donkey’s teeth should be examined at least once a year.
Our equine practice team are trained in equine dentistry and have a range of equipment to provide routine care at your horse's premises. We have access to advanced dental imaging and treatment options at the Equine Hospital if needed.
Veterinary surgeons are not only qualified to provide dental care to horses but can also utilise sedation, pain relief, and local anaesthesia as required during dental work. This allows for a more thorough examination, more targeted treatment, and less pain or stress to your horse.
We recommend that your horse has a dental examination every 6-12 months depending on the age of the horse, their history, and whether there are signs of oral discomfort e.g. when eating. This can be done on the premises where your horse is kept or at our hospital facility.
Most horses will require a reduction of sharp enamel points and possibly some overgrowth reductions. Where we suspect that a tooth has become infected or is fractured and may require removal, further imaging, and potential tooth removal can be performed at the Equine Hospital.
We also offer a discounted rate for dental treatments performed on a Monday morning, as part of our student teaching package. This includes sedation, examination, and rasping of teeth. This is performed by the final-year veterinary students, under constant supervision by one of our senior vets.
