Ophthalmology
We offer a range of ophthalmology services that deal with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders.
Cataracts
Cataracts are commonly detected in the equine lens and often require specialist evaluation to determine if they are likely to progress or if they are associated with disease.
In the rare event of a severe cataract which is completely obstructing vision, we can perform phacoemulsification to remove the cataract based on assessment of individual cases.
Uveitis
Uveitis is a common cause of recurrent eye pain in the horse. At the Equine Hospital, we offer a range of treatments for equine recurrent uveitis (ERU), including cyclosporine implantation, intravitreal gentamicin injection and suprachoroidal triamcinolone injections.
Corneal ulceration
Corneal ulceration occurs when the outer layer of the surface of the eye has been eroded. They can become serious and have the potential to impair vision and cause blindness if they are not treated quickly and correctly.
Severe cases of corneal ulceration may require hospitalisation for treatment. We can administer regular medication day and night, often using a specialised lavage system and a protective mask throughout a horse's stay. Hospitalisation allows intensive monitoring of the comfort and condition of the eye with prompt intervention when required.
Masses around the eye
Various masses can develop around the eye including sarcoids, melanoma and other tumours. These require careful management to minimise the chance of permanent irritation to the eye or regrowth of the mass. Depending on the type of mass, its size, and location relative to the eye, we can offer medical (including chemotherapy), surgical, or combination therapy to treat these.
