Surgery
We have a range of state of the art surgical facilities and equipment enabling us to offer a full range surgical procedures.
Some procedures may be performed standing in the sedated horse or may require a full general anaesthetic.
Our surgical team is supported by our specialist-led Anaesthesia team who monitor our patients to ensure the best possible anaesthesia and recovery.
Surgery team
Our senior surgeons are Diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons or the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, who have undergone rigorous training to become a specialist in surgery. They are supported by our surgery residents, interns and nurses.
Clinical expertise and research
We are world renowned for our contribution to surgery research. Our senior clinicians regularly present the results of their research at conferences nationally and internationally.
Surgical facilities
We have two well equipped operating theatres and four anaesthetic induction/recovery boxes with rope assisted recovery systems. We also have two additional standing surgery suites. Our surgical equipment includes:
- Complete AO fracture fixation equipment allowing us to manage all fractures
- Arthroscopic and Laparoscopic equipment
- Nanoscope
- Mono and Bipolar thermocautery and a Ligasure device
- Diode and CO2 laser equipment
- Orthokine PRP/IRAP.
Orthopaedic surgery
We offer a full range of orthopaedic surgery including arthroscopy, tenoscopy, fracture repair, and all other orthopaedic procedures.
Our advanced imaging facilities enabling us to undertake computed tomography to assist surgical planning of fractures and other orthopaedic conditions and to perform intraoperative imaging to guide surgical success.
Head and neck surgery
We perform a range of procedures of the sinuses, larynx and pharynx, guttural pouches, eyes and other soft tissues of the head and neck.
This includes management of fractures of the skull, facial reconstructive surgery following trauma or removal of masses and surgery of the upper respiratory system, including tie back tie forward and laser surgery.
We are one of the only hospitals in the UK to offer TACE arterial embolisation for the treatment of gutteral pouch mycosis.
Abdominal surgery
- Emergency surgery for colic
- Caesarean sections
- Standing surgery to reduce the recurrence of colic, including closure of the nephrosplenic space or mesh ablation of the epiploic foramen
- Routine castration and castration of colts with abdominally or inguinally retained testicles.
- Ovariectomy
- Hernia repair.
Skin and reconstructive surgery
To treat a variety of traumatic injuries, some of which may involve deeper structures and more complex surgery.
Tumour removal including sarcoids, melanomas and any others which may involve use of surgical lasers.
Reproductive and urinary tract surgery
- Routine castration and castration of colts with abdominally or inguinally retained testicles
- Surgical management of cancers of the penis and prepuce elective procedures of the ovary, uterus and vagina in mares including laparoscopy, hysterectomy, laser procedures or reconstructive surgery
- Urinary tract surgery may involve removal of bladder stones and developmental conditions
- Repair and reconstruction of broodmares.
Laparoscopy and thoracoscopy
This involves minimally invasive surgery using a, rigid camera and instruments inserted via small incisions.
Laparoscopy may also be indicated to prevent of certain types of colic including closure of the nephrosplenic space or mesh ablation of the epiploic foramen.
