Sustainability
Our sustainability strategy of the School of Veterinary Sciences is aimed at complementing that of the University of Liverpool.
Adhering to the University of Liverpool Sustainability Strategy 2031, we have three main targets:
- Becoming net-zero by 2035
- Reducing our waste by 50% by 2025
- Providing sustainability-related teaching modules and extracurricular activities to every student.
Alongside contributing to the University of Liverpool’s main sustainability targets, the School of Veterinary Sciences has also created its own specific goals which will be prioritised:
- Embed sustainability across the veterinary science curriculum
- Improve student and staff engagement and provide specific sustainability training
- Improve biodiversity
- Sustainable travel
- Sustainable research and research labs.
Specific measures towards becoming more environmentally sustainable at the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital include:
- Reduction in the usage of single use materials and replaced them with reusable alternatives whenever this is safe and does not affect infection control policies
- Use of rebreathing systems and low-flow anaesthesia to minimise the release of anaesthetic gases with greenhouse effect. Nitrous oxide is not used
- Improvement in waste disposal routes, increased recycling and segregation of clinical waste
- Use of environmentally friendly products for hospital disinfection
- Educating horse owners in the responsible use of parasiticides (wormers) and antibiotics.
