How you'll learn
You’ll be taught through a diverse blend of engaging teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, practical classes, video content, interactive learning sessions, independent study, and supervised project work.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a vibrant, stimulating, and supportive learning environment with highly motivated and exceptionally qualified staff, renowned for their world-leading research and teaching.
For the year one semester one module MATH113 (Core Mathematics I), students meet in small groups to discuss problems with academic tutors. These tutorials also help develop students’ ability to write, present, and discuss complex material. For other modules, small-group tutorials are replaced by problem classes in larger groups, which allow students to develop their problem-solving skills in an interactive environment.
All lecturers are available for one-to-one or small group support during regular office hours. Independent study is expected throughout the programme, and students are directed to reading lists and other resources to support it.
How you're assessed
Assessment is by end-of-semester examinations and/or continuous assessment. All mathematics modules have a coursework component. Forms of assessment used within the department include problem sheets, class tests, individual and group project work, report and essay writing, individual and group presentations, portfolio creation and reflective writing.
