This programme combines Mathematics and Music Technology as a Joint Honours programme.
Combine the logic of mathematics with the creativity of music technology. This unique Joint Honours degree brings together two exciting disciplines, allowing you to develop advanced mathematical problem-solving skills while exploring the art and science of music production, sound design and audio technology. You’ll study everything from acoustics, recording and electronic music to topics ranging from financial mathematics and fluid mechanics to chaos and combinatorics. With access to industry-standard studios and expert teaching across both subjects, you’ll graduate with a distinctive blend of analytical and creative skills that stand out in a wide range of careers.

Students must take an equal number of credits (60) from both Maths and Music Tech each year, and these must be divided evenly between each semester (30 credits per semester).
As the Maths programme has required 30-credit modules in each semester (MATH112 and MATH113) this means that there are no optional Maths modules in year one.
For Music Technology, students are required to take the 30-credit module MUSI103 (Recording and Production), but as this module is split between both semesters, students therefore have an optional 15 credits to choose for each semester. This can either be two 15-credit modules (MUSI109 in semester 1, and either MUSI110 or MUSI170 in semester 2), or it can be the 30-credit module MUSI122 which is split between both semesters.

You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical studio sessions, workshops and independent study. In Music Technology, you’ll gain hands-on experience in acoustics, sound recording and music production using professional studios, analogue consoles and industry-standard Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). In Mathematics, you’ll develop your understanding through problem-solving, small-group tutorials and peer-assisted study sessions. As you progress, you’ll have opportunities to specialise in areas such as live sound, electronic music, sound design and advanced mathematical topics that match your interests.
Assessment methods are designed to reflect the varied nature of the programme. In Mathematics, you’ll typically be assessed through examinations, coursework, problem-solving exercises and mathematical projects. In Music Technology, assessment may include studio productions, sound design projects, compositions, technical portfolios, presentations and written assignments. Throughout the degree, you’ll be encouraged to apply both technical and creative thinking, building a portfolio of work that demonstrates your skills across both disciplines.
