The Bloomberg Scholarship

The University of Liverpool and the Bloomberg Scholarship Fund are pleased to offer 4 scholarships each year, to support undergraduate applicants from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds who permanently reside in the Liverpool City Region. 

Applicants must be ordinarily resident in the UK and undertaking an undergraduate programme starting in the academic year 2026/27.

The Bloomberg Scholarships are possible due to the generosity of the late Mr Henry (Harry) Bloomberg, who was an advocate of education for all, regardless of background.

The award

The scholarship will provide a maintenance stipend of £5,000 each year, for 3 years of study, a total of £15,000 per student. The scholarship is awarded subject to satisfactory progression.

The Bloomberg Scholarship may also be held in conjunction with other applicable University of Liverpool widening participation bursaries. 

Eligibility criteria

You must meet all of the following criteria to be considered for this scholarship:

  1. Permanently reside in the Liverpool City Region – Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton, Halton or St. Helens prior to commencing study (your home address as stated in your UCAS application). Students from the Wirral may be prioritised
  2. Be studying in Year 0 or Year 1 of a full-time undergraduate degree programme, commencing study in the 2026/27 academic year at the University of Liverpool
  3. This must be your first degree. You must not already hold a degree or equivalent higher-level qualification
  4. Come from a home where neither parent attended university in the UK or abroad. If one or more parent is currently studying their first degree, or graduated from their first degree within the last 5 years, an application will be considered eligible for this criteria
  5. Have been assessed for fee status as a 'home' student, or expect to be assessed as a ‘home student’
  6. Have a household income of £25,000 per annum or less
  7. Have made an application to Student Finance England. We'll seek confirmation that you'll be in receipt of full financial support for the 2026/27 academic year. Please ensure you've given consent to share the information with the University, as this information will be used to determine eligibility
  8. We'll also look at where you live (postcode) and other measures of educational challenges, often referred to as socio-economic metrics. See further information on widening access and contextual admissions at the University of Liverpool and how we assess candidates.

You won't be eligible if you:

  • Transfer to Liverpool from another UK University. We can only accept applications from students beginning a new course at Liverpool
  • Already hold a degree or equivalent higher-level qualification.

How to apply

Applications are currently closed. Applications for the academic year 2026/27 will open in August 2026.

The scholarship is competitive. You should attempt to complete your application to the highest standard if you wish to be considered.

Completing your application

As part of the application process, you'll need to provide:

  • Your full name
  • Your University student ID number
  • Your full home address (including Postal Code)
  • Your programme of study
  • Name of the School or College that you previously attended
  • Your email address
  • Confirmation that you have applied, been assessed for and expect to be in receipt of the maximum level of support from the government through Student Finance England, for tuition fees and maintenance loans and that you have provided consent to share your information with the University
  • Confirmation this is your first undergraduate degree programme, and you have not started a degree programme previously
  • Confirmation that you understand that representatives from the Bloomberg Scholarship Fund will view your application as part of the selection process.

To help us with your selection process, we'll also ask you for a statement in response to the following:

  • Tell about the highlights of your education so far, why you've chosen your degree subject and how the scholarship will be beneficial to your education and academic goals.

You have a maximum of 4,000 characters for your statement.

Closing date

The closing date will be published in August 2026.

Decisions

A panel of representatives from the University of Liverpool will assess applications and compile a shortlist of the strongest applications. The shortlist will be shared with the Bloomberg Scholarship Fund.

You'll be notified of the outcome of your application in December 2026.
