Research

Guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and framed around the themes of Sustainable Futures, Environmental and Human Health, and Fluids in Nature, our world-class, multidisciplinary researchers harness cutting-edge experimental and computational facilities to address major global challenges. These include climate change, net-zero engineering solutions, future cities, and infrastructure resilience.

The University of Liverpool is a leading Russell Group research institution, with a strong community of globally recognised academics. Our engineering research strength was recognised in the latest Research Excellence Framework 2021, where we were rated 6th in the UK for outstanding impact.

Research within the Department spans a broad range of engineering and design disciplines, including structural engineering, sustainable construction materials, geomechanics, water and environmental engineering, coastal sediment dynamics, tidal energy, transportation engineering, biomaterials, and biomechanics. We take an interdisciplinary research approach, working closely with the School of Environmental Sciences and the School of Architecture.
