Translating, interpreting and subtitling

Translation, interpreting…there is an app for that, right?

There might be, but our students will become experts and beat the apps in depth. Throughout the programme, our students will learn to convey both the meaning and the intention of spoken and written texts using a variety of skills and professional tools, and to develop a feel for detail in language as well as culture.

All translation and mediation-related skills will be gradually inserted in the studies, starting from Y1, when students will work on translation tasks, summarising, note-taking, and integrated skills. Depending on the language they study, in Y2 students will explore translation further and will be introduced to interpreting and subtitling with a focus on enhancing their language learning.

Translating and interpreting are highly sought-after skills for Year Abroad placements, where we have partnerships with translation companies. These skills can then be transferred to graduate jobs. During the Year Abroad, students will experience immersive language learning; they can decide whether to study or work: our placements include internships in translation companies and in bilingual establishments. In Final Year, our students will deepen these skills to prepare them for their professional future.

In fact, numerous jobs in the field of developing apps and AI tools await our highly trained linguists. There is also the opportunity to specialise further by doing an MA in Translation at the University of Liverpool with optional modules in Subtitling and in Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting.
