Clinical Skills and Diagnostics – Adult Cardiovascular and Respiratory in Acute and Long-Term Conditions (HEAL447)
This module will equip clinicians with the in-depth knowledge and understanding necessary to perform effective clinical examinations of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems whilst demonstrating advanced clinical reasoning to direct further patient management. This course has also been carefully designed to develop the learners' ability to reflect critically on their professional practice and demonstrate an understanding of the limitations of their role.
Module delivery
Part time delivery, with the module delivered in one semester.
The module runs in semester one, lasting for 12 weeks, on Wednesday afternoons. Sessions will begin 13:30pm and run until 16:30pm.
As the module relates to Professional and Statutory Body PSRB) requirements, the vast majority of the sessions are conducted On Campus at the University of Liverpool. Some reading weeks and online teaching are provided during the module, but it is expected that you are able to attend for the in-person sessions. Please ensure that you plan this in advance with your organisation.

Who is the module for?
The module is designed for registered healthcare professionals. The module can be chosen as a standalone option and be used to support continuous professional development.
Module details and indicative content
Learners will apply and evaluate critically the key elements of clinical history taking using a systems-based approach for specific patient groups to inform the objective physical examination.
In addition, they will be expected to perform a safe and comprehensive physical examination of the patient after obtaining proper informed consent.
Learners will also critically analyse the clinical and physical information gained from history taking and physical examinations using a robust clinical reasoning and decision-making process to correctly direct patient management.
They will be expected to critically reflect on their own professional practice and demonstrate an awareness of their self-limitations and the ability to seek further advice as required.
Finally, learners will also analyse the roles of other professions within the practice setting and the value of interprofessional collaboration.
How you are assessed
There are two summative assessments:
- A written assessment – a clinical case study
- A practical assessment - an objective structured clinical examination
