School Lecturer Named Best Teacher at Guild Awards

Published on

Danny Blair, one of the School’s Therapeutic Radiography and Oncology Lecturers, has been named Teacher of the Year at this year’s Student Guild Awards.

The awards, which are voted for exclusively by students, shine a spotlight on individuals who make a significant impact on student experience at the University of Liverpool.

Reflecting on the moment he received the award at the ceremony in Mountford Hall, Danny said: “It was the first award of the evening, and I genuinely was just pleased to be there as a shortlisted nominee.

“The teachers I was up against support really large cohorts, so I didn’t expect to win. When my name was called, I felt ecstatic. I ran onto the stage like I’d just scored in a big game! Everyone was incredibly kind and supportive.”

Danny teaches across a wide range of modules on the BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography and Oncology programme, including oncology, physics and clinical radiotherapy.

He explained: “With a vocational course like ours, it’s essential to tie everything back to the realities of clinical practice. I also like to use discussion-based activities, interactive quizzes like Kahoot!, and even games like ‘spin the lecturer’ to keep students involved.

“If I notice that the room looks a bit sleepy, I might even sing to the students to re-engage them.

Danny also values building personal connections with his students, often finding common ground through shared interests—whether it’s music, sport, or cultural experiences—to create a more supportive and engaging learning environment.

He said: “We always start lectures with five minutes of ‘good news’ from the students’ week—it’s a simple way to help everyone feel seen and heard, and it really builds rapport.”

Danny’s recognition reflects the School’s commitment to delivering high-quality, student-centred education. By combining academic rigour with an inclusive and engaging teaching environment, the School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing continues to prepare students for impactful and rewarding careers in healthcare.
