Become a Lifesaver: Register Your Pet as a Blood Donor Today!
Did you know that just like humans, dogs and cats can donate blood — and in some cases, it can mean the difference between life and death for another pet? At the Small Animal Teaching Hospital we’re building a Pet Blood Donor Register, and we’re inviting local pet owners to help us save lives by registering their dogs and cats as potential blood donors.
Why do pets need blood?
Blood transfusions are often required in emergency situations such as trauma, surgery, or treatment for certain illnesses. Having a reliable supply of pet blood means we can respond quickly when a patient is in critical need. Unlike in human medicine, there’s no central pet blood bank – that’s why we rely on the generosity of healthy, calm pets and their owners to help build a local donor network.
Could your pet be a hero?
We’re looking for:
Dogs who are:
- Aged between 1 and 8 years
- Weigh 25kg or more
- Fit, healthy, and up to date with vaccinations
- Friendly and happy being handled
Cats who are:
- Aged between 1 and 8 years
- Weigh over 4kg
- Indoor-only, calm and confident
- Fully vaccinated and healthy
Each donation is performed by our experienced veterinary team in a calm, caring environment. Pets are closely monitored throughout and are showered with fuss, treats, and a goody bag as a thank-you for their generosity!
