Soft tissue surgery
The soft tissue surgery service handles a wide variety of externally referred cases, as well as cases referred within the Hospital, mainly from the internal medicine, cardiology and oncology (cancer) services.
We work closely with the diagnostic imaging team (X-rays, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans), as well as with anaesthetists, to offer the highest standards of surgical care.
In addition to traditional "open" surgery, we offer minimally invasive ("keyhole") surgery. This helps to minimise post-operative discomfort for patients and drive shorter recovery times.
The service has a varied caseload, including:
- Abdominal surgery for removal or biopsy of tumours, investigation of vomiting and diarrhoea, removal of intestinal foreign bodies, treatment of urinary incontinence and more
- Tumour surgery and wound management, including management of traumatic injuries such as road traffic accidents
- Chest surgery, including:
- Lung lobectomy (taking out lung tissue that is diseased or damaged)
- Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation (tying off blood vessels in the heart of young patients that haven’t properly closed off while in the womb)
- Pericardiectomy (taking out part of the sac surrounding the heart if it is diseased).
