Professional Activities

I have been involved in a number of KE and external engagement activities, related to teaching and to research.

Teaching:
Global governance is now on the A-level curriculum. With this change I have been involved in authoring information to share with schools nationwide, via the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) (information here: http://www.rgs.org/OurWork/Schools/School+Members+Area/Ask+the+experts/Governance+of+the+oceans.htm) In 2017 I will deliver the annual schools lecture on this topic.

Research:
1) Funded by a Strategic Insight Programme (SIP) HEFCW Innovation and Business Grant (2014-5), I have completed a programme of work that builds external collaborations concerning the role of Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS) use at sea in the 21st century. This scoping project established a collaborative link with military and government partners to assess how geographers can add to the discussion of the practical, ethical and legal challenges of MAS.

2) Funded by an Economic and Social Research Council PhD studentship (2007-2011), I have explored the governance of international waters against offshore radio piracy, particularly in the context of the North Sea pirates. This led to a series of media engagements, in print and on radio, discussing the regulation of broadcasting in the 1960s through to the 1990s. Engagements include:

• Article in the AberNews (Issue 38) July 2014 ‘Sounds of the Seas'
• Article in Radio Caroline Fanzine ‘Horizon’ (Issue 140) October 2011 ‘Researching Radio Caroline’
• Article in the Sunday Times, 15th August 2010. ‘Aha, me hearties – pirate radio ship is haunted’.
• Article in Radio Caroline Fanzine ‘Horizon’ (Issue 121) October 2008. ‘Radio Caroline and the geography of ships’

• Radio Interview Bay Radio Aberystwyth 4th December 2013 Hour interview on music, pirate radio and geography.
