About

Dr Erin Ferguson is a Lecturer in Law specialising in UK public law and human rights.

Erin is broadly interested in questions concerning the role of the state in delivering public services and addressing socio-economic inequalities. She has a longstanding interest in privatisation and its relationship to public law. Her PhD research examined the impact of privatisation on access to official information in the UK. She has published several articles on this topic and was invited to give evidence to the Scottish Parliament in 2025 as part of its scrutiny of the Freedom of Information Scotland (Reform) Bill. Erin is now building on this work by writing a book that takes a broader, socio-legal approach to examine the human rights implications of privatisation in public services.

Arising out of her work on access to environmental information, Erin has recently expanded her research focus to include substantive environmental rights and environmental constitutionalism. She has recently published on the proposed right to a healthy environment in Scotland and climate change adjudication.

Prior to joining Liverpool in September 2026, Erin was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Aberdeen (2021-2026) and the University of Buckingham (2019-2021). She earned her PhD from the University of Strathclyde in 2020. Erin also holds an LLM from Strathclyde and an undergraduate degree in Sociology and History from Smith College in the United States.

Erin is a member of the Liverpool Public Law Unit and the People's Justice Network. Externally, Erin serves on the Law Society of Scotland's Constitutional Law and Human Rights Sub-Committee.
