Research

Dr Daniel Chesse is lecturer and a researcher specialising in political conflict, security, and the lived experience of violence, with a particular focus on the Northern Ireland Troubles. His work examines the role of local security actors, state–society relations, and the ways in which communities interpret, remember, and narrate conflict. Drawing on archival research, oral histories, and qualitative analysis, his research offers new insights into the relationship between state institutions, armed groups, and civilian life in contested environments.

Beyond Ireland, Daniel’s research engages with broader comparative themes in conflict studies, including counterinsurgency, community policing, political memory, and the governance of divided societies. His work contributes to interdisciplinary debates across Irish Studies, political science, history, and security studies, and he is committed to producing scholarship that is both academically rigorous and accessible to wider public and policy audiences.
