About

I am a historian of Modern Britain, with a specific interest in Victorian crime and punishment and female petty offending. Within these topics, I look at policing, sentencing policy and the lives of women caught up in the local prison system. I also explore the social inequalities in Victorian Britain which are exposed by a study of crime. My PhD explored women committed to Strangeways Prison, Manchester, for drunkenness between 1869 and 1875 and I am currently working on converting my thesis into a book, provisionally titled 'Female Offending and the Police Courts in Victorian Lancashire', via LUP. Previously, I was co-investigator on www.womanandalcohol.net, a project funded by the National Science Centre, Poland.
