Research Interest 1
Primary research focused around idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) namely, polymyositis, dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. Our aims are to determine the cellular mechanisms that result in muscle weakness and loss of muscle function in patients with myositis. Interests in the impact of disease states and pathologies on skeletal muscle. Specifically the impact of ROS and cytokines on muscle with particular interest in mitochondrial function.Additional interests in the role of skeletal muscle as an endocrine organ with perspectives towards myokines, extracellular heat shock proteins and examination of the endocytic pathway and membrane trafficking via exosomes.
