Facilities
Our Department has exceptional facilities for use in teaching and research, including full motion flight simulators, wind tunnels and a 90,000l recirculating water tunnel.
Given our focus on practical and project-based learning, our extensive labs, workshops, and virtual reality space are vital to allow students freedom to experiment, build and test. From drones to wind turbines, Formula Student cars to hand powered bikes, and transforming school waste into innovative new products, if our students can imagine it, we give them the space and equipment to make it.
Large wind tunnel
Our blow-down wind tunnel has a 6 components force balance with 2D positioning system for pitch and yaw, with a flow speed up to U∞=30m/s with 1% turbulent intensity.
Flight simulators
Our flexible simulators let you experience flying a variety of aircraft and spacecraft, offering training and research capabilities typically found only in specialised centres.
Hydraulics lab
Home to one of the UK’s most advanced hydraulic labs with water channels, wave tanks, sediment flumes, and laser equipment.
Flexible heat pump
Our Flexible Heat Pump Technology is an innovation that facilitates the development of the next generation of heat pumps with improved energy efficiency and flexibility.
