About us
Mechanical and aerospace engineering underpins so many aspects of everyday life. Our engineers are focused on advancing these disciplines to create better outcomes for people and the planet.
Our mechanical engineering expertise spans fluid mechanics and dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and solid mechanics, as well as solar, wind, and thermal energy technologies. Our aerospace-related research ranges from the development of advanced computational fluid dynamics codes and flight simulation assessment technologies to autonomous flight control and space mission planning.
We offer a wide range of research-led, internationally attractive undergraduate and postgraduate mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering degree programmes. For both our teaching and research we work closely with partners within the University, such as the Digital Innovation Facility and Virtual Engineering Centre, and external industrial and academic partners.
Sustainable solutions
To mitigate the catastrophic consequences of climate change driven by global warming, society must urgently reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards a net-zero future. This critical issue presents a complex energy trilemma of security, affordability, and sustainability. Our mechanical engineers are making important contributions in addressing these challenges by exploring renewable energy sources, advancing novel concepts and processes, innovating efficient energy technologies, and digitising our energy systems.
Our aerospace engineers are dedicated to developing solutions to ensure safer, more reliable, and environmentally conscious air and space travel. Our recent Royal Aeronautical Society award wins recognise our work in developing highly accurate simulation models that enable aircraft testing in virtual environments rather than the real world, reducing both emissions and risk to pilots. Our work to improve the safety of air ambulance operations on retrofitted hospital helipads further demonstrate our commitment to delivering safer, more sustainable aviation solutions.
