About us
Our vision is to build on our ground-breaking work in materials, design, and manufacturing to evolve and deepen our clinical, commercial, and societal impact.
Our research spans all scales, from atomic-level control of materials development and surface deposition to the large-scale production of components. Our expertise in human-centred design methodologies ensures that our research delivers lasting value and meets real end-user needs. Our Department has successfully supported the spin-out of several high-profile companies across the biomedical, materials, and manufacturing disciplines, and we use this expertise to nurture the next generation of high-impact research.
We continue to invest strategically in equipment and facilities across our core disciplines, while also supporting emerging fields through the development of new multidisciplinary research areas. These include biomanufacturing, soft matter, advanced materials characterisation, and the application of cutting-edge digital and virtual technologies to enhance testing and evaluation.
We offer a range of research-led, internationally attractive BEng and MEng programmes in Product Design Engineering, alongside MSc programmes in Advanced Manufacturing Systems Technologies, Product Design and Management and various Biomedical Engineering MSc options. These courses are guided by close collaboration with our Industrial Liaison Board, supporting our commitment to developing globally aware, highly employable, and solutions-focused engineers.
In the video below, biomedical engineer Professor Raechelle D’Sa and her colleagues explain how their cutting-edge healthcare technology research and innovation are tackling some of the most pressing medical challenges of the 21st century.
