About
Professor Nikolaos (Nick) Papageorgiadis joined the University of Liverpool in 2014 and has held a Chair in International Business since 2020.
Nick’s research examines how the strength of patent and intellectual property (IP) enforcement systems across countries shapes international business activity, firms’ strategic decisions, and managerial practices. His work also investigates patent litigation strategy and its implications for innovation, competition, and firm performance.
Insights from his peer-reviewed studies have been cited and adopted in reports by leading international organisations, including the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Nations (UN), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), where they have informed policy discussions on IP, innovation, trade, and economic growth. He is widely recognised for co-developing the Patent Enforcement Index (1998-2025), a global measure of the strength of patent enforcement systems across countries. This research has also been used to inform the decisions of policymakers, multinational companies, SMEs, and patent practitioners worldwide, supporting strategic IP management and internationalisation decisions.
At the University of Liverpool, Nick currently serves as Director of Research for the Strategy, International Business and Entrepreneurship (SIBE) group (from September 2025) and previously served as School Director of Postgraduate Research Programmes (2021-2025). He brings a goal- and results-oriented approach to leadership, focusing on initiatives that deliver measurable improvements to the School’s research environment and to both staff and doctoral experiences.
Nick is Associate Editor of Industry and Innovation and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of World Business and the Journal of International Business Policy.
He has received multiple Research and Teaching Innovation and Excellence Awards for his engaging, research-informed teaching in international business, business strategy, and strategic IP management, delivered to both academic and practitioner audiences.
