Personal Statement

Training
Mr Phillip Brown is a Clinical Senior Lecturer who graduated with a Degree of ‘Bachelor of Dental Surgery’ from the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry in 2007. After completing Vocational Training (2007-2008) he completed further training in his subjects of interest and has received a Postgraduate Diploma in ‘Dental Implantology’ from the University of Central Lancashire in 2014 and a Postgraduate Certificate in ‘Clinical Teaching and Learning’ from Edge Hill University in 2017. He has continued with his interest in Education by completing a Master of Arts in ‘Academic Practice’ at the University of Liverpool (2023).

Current Roles

Internal

His full-time Clinical Lecturing post at the University of Liverpool began in 2018 where he spends a majority of his time teaching Undergraduate Dental Students in the School of Dentistry’s open plan clinics or in Outreach Dental Practices in the Cheshire and Merseyside region. Since 2018 Phill has been the Academic Lead for the Schools Outreach Component, which includes developing teaching content and allocating 3rd/4th/5th year Undergraduate Dental and Dental Therapy Students into NHS General and Community dental practices in the Cheshire and Merseyside Region. He also is responsible for ensuring the Quality Assurance processes and financial governance surrounding external placements at the University are followed. He holds the role of 5th BDS Year Lead, which involves leadership and management activities within the School including contributing to the student experience, reporting to management groups, and liaising with component leads throughout an academic year. Phill also holds governance roles within the University including being a member of Senate, the Faculty Academic Quality Standards Committee (FAQSC), and he is also a panel member of the Health and Conduct Panel for The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. He is also appointed as an Academic Misconduct Investigating Officer, providing support and reporting to the Student Conducts, Complaints and Compliance Team in matters relating to student misconduct during University examinations.

External

In 2022 he became a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry and was invited to become one of the first Facilitators for the College's Certified Membership scheme, supporting dental professionals in their career development. Phill is also an elected member and Honorary Secretary of Wirral Local Dental Committee - representing the views of NHS Primary Care General Dental Practitioners at a local and national level. He also sits as an LDC representative for a newly established Primary Care Council, which informs the newly established Integrated Care Boards of important local topics within the Wirral area in collaboration with other primary care providers such as GPs, Pharmacists and Opticians.

Previous Roles
Phill began his career in 2007 as a General Dental Practitioner and during this time spent 10 years practising general dentistry as a associate/performer and practice owner/provider in an NHS primary care setting.
