Personal Statement

Dr Khuzwayo C. Jere is a Medical Virologist, a Tenure Track Fellow at the University of Liverpool, an International Wellcome Training Fellow and heads the Virology Research Group at the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (MLW). He is a co-founder of the African Enteric Viruses Genome Initiative (AEGVI) and saves as a core member of the Malawi National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (MAITAG). He saves at the College of Experts panels for the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) DHSC/UKRI Global Effect on COVID-19 (GECO) Health Research call. He is an investigator on several studies, a member of the MLW Research Strategy Governance (RSG) committee, an integral member of the MLW/COM training committee and mentors a pipeline of trainees ranging from Masters to Postdoctoral scientists within his group. He has over 10 years of experience in experimental design, testing in clinical trials, assessment of effectiveness of vaccines and engagement with various policy makers. He has published several peer-reviewed articles in international journals (ORCID iD:0000-0003-3376-8529) and his current work focuses on understanding the evolution of viral pathogens, elucidation of human immune responses induced through vaccination and natural infection of enteric viruses, and evaluation of new vaccine candidates through clinical trials and assessment of vaccine effectiveness of enteric vaccines in children living in low-income settings.
