Public Health Economics and Universal Health Coverage

Code: PUBH304

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 2

This module develops students’ advanced understanding of public health economics and the financing mechanisms that shape health system performance and equity. Students examine global and national approaches to health financing, explore models of universal health coverage, and analyse how economic evidence informs strategic decision‑making in public health. Learning is delivered through a flexible blend of asynchronous online materials, synchronous interactive sessions, and intensive in‑person teaching at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Kenya.

The module is assessed through two individual written assignments: an analysis of a selected health financing system and an economic evaluation of a public health intervention. These authentic assessments require students to apply economic principles to real‑world or simulated scenarios, supporting the development of analytical, evaluative, and evidence‑informed decision‑making skills relevant to professional public health practice.
