One Health Practice

Code: IVES730

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

How do we tackle health problems that affect people, animals, and the environment — all at once? This module introduces One Health as a practical, systems-based approach to solving complex health challenges in African settings, where human, agricultural, and ecological systems are deeply interconnected.
Students will learn how to apply systems thinking, collaborate across sectors, and work meaningfully with communities to design solutions that are inclusive, sustainable, and grounded in local realities. They will build practical competencies in data-informed decision making, cross-sectoral collaboration, and participatory community engagement, with cross-cutting attention to culture and gender responsiveness.

The module is delivered through active, participatory learning methods including interactive presentations, small group discussions, role-plays, and case study analysis. Students are encouraged to draw on their own knowledge and lived experiences throughout the learning process. Assessment is based on coursework and a group project that is designed to reflect real-world One Health practice.
