Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Legal Services

Code: LAW383

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

LAW383 has been designed in collaboration with key partners from the legal and technology sectors and it builds on contemporary debates about the future of law and the future of the legal professions. The module was cited in the LawTech UK report ‘Shaping the Future of Law (2021)’ as a contributor to ‘Technology awareness and capability’ within the legal sector. Liverpool was identified as one of only 6 universities contributing to this objective. Teaching and assessment in LAW383 focus on two distinct topics: how far AI can resolve legal problems in real life justice contexts; and what limits should be placed on its use in those contexts. The first theme is predominantly addressed in a heavily structured group project activity during which students will lean why AI means, discover how to create an AI application, and apply that knowledge to build an AI prototype. The project component will be assessed within a team presentation where students present and explain their prototypes. The second theme will be addressed in students’ individual essays. The essay component will draw substantially from topics and materials that are provided to students during the course. Both assessment components will be published at the start of the course, and students will be supported to develop their project and essay work in tandem. As a project-based module, LAW383 will require sustained commitment by students both to their respective team-mates and to the project itself. Attendance during timetabled classes is a requirement for this module and engagement with unscheduled team activities is closely monitored to determine individual student grades. This module will be more suitable for students who are not solely interested in the conventional approach to learning and applying the law, but who have a strong desire to expand their technical skill set and project-management skills to meet the growing demand in the legal sector for lawyers who are also capable of contributing to innovation projects.
