Learn Italian with subtitles

This is a research-led learning and teaching (L&T) project based on a collaboration between the University of Liverpool (UK) and partner Università di Macerata (Italy). The project is focused on the systematic use of audiovisual translation (AVT), specifically interlingual subtitling activities, in language education via an interdisciplinary approach, i.e., the merge of AVT studies and FL pedagogy.

Researcher: Dr Rosalba Biasini in collaboration with the Università di Macerata (Italy)

The project launched in Liverpool in 2019–20 and piloted in a final year module of Italian (ITAL311). The activities have now been extended to final year Spanish (SPAN312, from 2023-24) and several other Italian language modules (ITAL106, ITAL207, ITAL278, from 2024-25).

Aims

  • To develop advanced language, language-related, and interlinguistic skills;
  • To develop advanced cultural and intercultural skills;
  • To explore the deployment of digital technologies and AVT tools as well as their applications and social impact on language L&T.
