Digital choices for a sustainable future
Digital innovation brings great opportunity but also responsibility. We are committed to ensuring that our use of technology supports the University’s environmental and social goals while reducing our carbon footprint and promoting responsible, sustainable growth.
Embedding sustainable digital technologies
- We are working to understand and reduce the environmental impact of our digital activity. By using energy-efficient technologies, moving appropriate services to the cloud and modernising our data infrastructure, we will minimise the emissions associated with our research computing and IT services
- Our goal is to deliver efficient, scalable digital services that contribute to the University’s wider net zero commitments.
Driving responsible procurement and reducing waste
- We are taking a circular economy approach to how we buy, use and dispose of technology. This includes extending the life of IT equipment, reducing e-waste and ensuring that social value is built into our procurement decisions
- Through these actions, we aim to make every stage of our digital lifecycle more sustainable.
Building digital sustainability skills and awareness
- We are helping staff and students understand how digital behaviours affect the environment. By providing training, sharing good practice and promoting responsible use of data and devices, we can reduce unnecessary energy use and waste
- Digital sustainability is everyone’s responsibility, and our collective awareness will help the University make lasting change.
