Gillian McGrattan
Member of Council 2025 – 2028
Gillian is currently a Non-Executive Director at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Vice-Chair of the Trust’s People and Culture Committee. She is also a Trustee of the Metanoia Institute, a specialist HE and training provider in London and chairs its Staffing and Resourcing.
Previously, Gillian held lead Executive HR and People roles at the Universities of Warwick and Birmingham. Before entering the Higher Education sector she was an Executive Board member at National Savings and Investments, a senior civil service role. This was a particularly interesting period, coinciding as it did with the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath. Before this role in government, Gillian’s previous career was entirely in the private sector; she was the National Director for HR Development at Grant Thonton UK LLP and, earlier, held senior HR strategy and leadership development roles in NatWest.
Prior to entering the world of HR and leadership development Gillian had worked as a professional economist, including responsibilities for financial and economic forecasting at NatWest Group and international country risk analysis with Standard Chartered Bank. She has a first class honours degree in Medical Sciences from the University of Birmingham, an MA (PPE) from Oxford and was seconded from NatWest to undertake a consortium MBA at the University of Warwick.
