Golden rules
The University recognises the value of students and staff exploring the use of GenAI and is committed to supporting this through the provision of training and the exploration of innovative and responsible use-cases.
- Use as a support tool – not a substitute: Use AI to support your work, but do not copy-paste outputs into assessed work, research submissions, or official documents without review and attribution
- Ask if unsure: If you are uncertain about AI use in your context (teaching, research, admin), consult your course organiser, research office, or relevant manager
- Acknowledge use: Where required, acknowledge AI use in your work. Include the tool name, version, and date of use for transparency
- Protect personal and sensitive data: Never upload personal or sensitive data to AI platforms unless you are sure it complies with the University's Data Protection Policy and GDPR
- Respect copyright: Do not upload or use copyrighted materials without permission, including articles accessed via the Library from behind a paywall i.e. that are not Open Access
- Verify facts: Always check AI outputs for factual accuracy, including references and citations
- Diversify sources: Use generative AI to supplement, not replace, traditional academic or professional sources.
In using AI tools for their work, staff are asked to adhere to the following guiding principles:
- Verification: Always verify AI outputs, especially when used in teaching, research, or public communications
- Transparency: Be open about your use of AI with students, colleagues, and external audiences
- Respect for intellectual property and data: Do not use or upload materials you do not have rights to and avoid sharing confidential or personal data
- Responsibility: Take professional responsibility for your use of AI and mitigate risks as appropriate
- Understand and explore: Engage with training and resources to build your AI literacy and use AI responsibly.
