UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent an urgent call to address the world’s most pressing, interconnected challenges. At the University of Liverpool we recognise our responsibility to help shape a sustainable future, locally, nationally and globally, and as such we are committed to driving meaningful progress across all 17 SDGs through our research, education and operations.

This past year marked a major milestone in our sustainability journey. We launched a new Sustainability Strategy, building on the University’s Liverpool 2031 framework, and strengthened our SDG research with the creation of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainability Research (ICSR), supporting teams tackling global challenges. We also became an early signatory to the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice.

Education remains central to our approach. Through the Liverpool Learning Framework, we are transforming our formal and extra-curricular offer to ensure students gain the knowledge, skills and experience to advance sustainable development. We also introduced new programmes, including the MSc in Sustainable Business, MSc Green Finance and Sustainability Accounting, and MSc Sustainable Civil and Structural Engineering.

We recognise that sustainability and social justice are inseparable, embedding equity, diversity and inclusion across our strategy to ensure no one is left behind. With this in mind, we are pleased to introduce our Sustainable Development Goals Report, outlining our 2024/25 progress in research, education and operations. It reflects the collective action of our staff, students and partners, and our belief that sustainability must shape everything we do. We hope it inspires continued innovation, collaboration and impact, locally and globally.
