The University has been officially awarded Fairtrade University status as part of the 2023–2025 Fairtrade University and College Award cohort, a key milestone in our broader commitment to sustainability, responsible procurement, and ethical supply chains.
This accreditation, delivered by the Fairtrade Foundation and Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK), recognises institutions taking a whole university approach to embedding Fairtrade principles into leadership, operations and the student experience.
Supporting our sustainability ambitions
The University’s Sustainability Committee initiated the accreditation process in 2023, aligning it with the wider ambitions set out in our Sustainability Strategy and Liverpool 2031. The aim is to promote ethical supply chain practices and increase our positive social impact locally and globally.
To lead the process, a dedicated Fairtrade working group was established, bringing together staff from Professional Services, academic departments, and the Liverpool Guild of Students. Over the course of the year, this cross-campus team delivered a series of actions including reviewing procurement policies, increasing the availability of Fairtrade products, and coordinating awareness raising events across campus.
Fairtrade in action
Engagement activity has included Fairtrade Coffee tastings with Grumpy Mule, chocolate promotions and events during the University’s annual Sustainability Week, all of which have helped to raise awareness and encourage ethical purchasing choices across the University community.
Students have also played an important role. A team of trained student auditors supported the accreditation process by evaluating Fairtrade practices and making recommendations for improvement.
Student auditor Hope Walker commented: “This was a valuable experience that gave me insight into how ethical practices can be promoted on campus.” Fellow auditor Lauren Goadby added: “The team worked well together across departments, which has made a real difference in promoting Fairtrade and raising awareness among staff and students.”
Part of a national effort
The University of Liverpool is one of 17 UK institutions to receive accreditation in the current cohort, joining universities such as Bristol, Manchester and King’s College London. The recognition supports our progress against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contributes positively to our performance in the People & Planet University League.
Looking ahead
Having achieved a One Star Fairtrade Award, the University will continue to strengthen its approach over the next two years, further embedding Fairtrade values into everyday University life.
