What’s next
Our upcoming plans for the estate include further developments for the Chemical Sciences Innovation building, Paddington South redevelopment, progressing with Health Innovation Liverpool and enhancing the campus experience.
Chemical Sciences Innovation building
The first phase of the Chemical Sciences Innovation building was approved in July 2025, marking a major step from vision to delivery. The project will:
- Drive innovation in chemical sciences
- Diversify and enhance income streams for the University
- Strengthen Liverpool’s position at the forefront of research and industry partnerships.
Next, the design team will develop the RIBA Stage 2 Concept Design, forming the foundation for the next business case.
Paddington South redevelopment
Liverpool’s £1billion Knowledge Quarter is entering its next phase with the redevelopment of Paddington South, a 9-acre site jointly owned by the University and Liverpool City Council. The plans include:
- Enhanced green spaces with a 10% biodiversity uplift
- New active travel routes and improved cycle connections
- Integration with Paddington Village, home to the Spine, Liverpool International College, a low-carbon energy centre, and the Novotel hotel.
Paddington South will shape the next generation of campus life, blending world-class facilities with a connected, sustainable community.
Health Innovation Liverpool
The Health Innovation Liverpool project will transform the Knowledge Quarter into a world-leading hub for health and life sciences. Next steps include:
- Progressing the Academic Health Sciences Campus beside the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre
- Advancing plans for the Bio-Innovation Campus at University Square.
These facilities will drive research, innovation, and training, supporting the Liverpool City Region’s Life Sciences Investment Zone goal to attract over £800 million in investment and create 8,000 new jobs.
Enhancing the campus experience
We’re committed to making the campus welcoming, inclusive, and high-quality for everyone who studies, works, or visits the University of Liverpool.
To support this, we’ve launched a 12-month pilot of the Happy or Not feedback tool, capturing real-time insights on service quality and satisfaction across four key zones:
- Sydney Jones Library
- Central Teaching Hub
- Sports Centre
- Bertie & Bella’s café.
We’re also engaging with the student-led Campus Experience Index (CEI) survey, which gathers detailed feedback on teaching, study, and social spaces. By comparing results with peer institutions, we can identify priorities and plan targeted improvements that reflect student needs and expectations.
