Estates Strategy 2031+: Year one highlights
Our first year of delivering the Estates Strategy 2031+ has brought major milestones across capital projects, student facilities, sustainability, and campus services — all aimed at creating a vibrant, welcoming, and sustainable campus.
Liverpool School of Architecture extension
The new extension reached a major milestone this year with a traditional topping out ceremony, marking the building’s highest point. Due for completion later this year, it will provide state-of-the-art facilities for teaching, research, and collaboration, strengthening the School’s position as a leader in architectural education.
Sport Liverpool
Sport Liverpool is helping drive a healthy, active campus with new facilities, record participation, and national recognition. Highlights include:
- A new synthetic rugby pitch
- Refurbished Wyncote stand
- A transformed Sports Centre gym
- Padel Courts coming in 2026
- Membership has grown to 7,800 students, with over 500,000 visits, nearly 5,000 Athletic Union members, 237 teams, and a 19th BUCS national ranking.
Bertie & Bella’s
Since reopening in September 2024, Bertie & Bella’s has welcomed over 66,000 customers. The revitalised space supports the meal plan relaunch and offers a lively place to dine, study, and socialise. Students and staff alike are using the venue as a hub of community and belonging, making it a staple of daily campus life.
Sustainability
We’ve made significant strides towards a greener campus:
- Launched the University’s first Biodiversity Plan and completed habitat surveys
- Cut general waste by 48% and saved £130k, reducing 60 tonnes of CO₂ through the Warp It reuse platform
- Increased solar generation sevenfold and began a geothermal study with the Royal Liverpool Hospital
- Upgraded key plant infrastructure to strengthen campus heat networks
- Delivered Sustainability Living Labs projects and secured an £850k energy rebate.
These efforts are helping to build a more sustainable, resilient campus for students, staff, and the wider community.
