Philosophy Students on trip to Hamburg, Germany

Published on

Our department successfully applied to the University’s Global Opportunities Fund, and also received School of the Arts Internationalisation funds, to support six philosophy students to visit classes and representatives of the Politics, Economics and Philosophy Master's Programme at the University of Hamburg in Germany.

The main purpose of this trip was to encourage philosophy students to consider a Master’s degree abroad and to help them making an informed decision.  One of the selling points of German universities is their considerably lower (or rather non-existent) fees, which might be advantageous for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The course in Hamburg (and other European Master’s) are fully taught in English, so there are no language barriers.

One of the participants wrote:

“I definitely found the trip very beneficial because I was quite unsure if I want to pursue a master's after my degree and the trip opened my eyes to the different opportunities available. I would have ruled out taking a master's course, assuming it would be very expensive but now I know that isn’t necessarily the case. Finally, as I’ve never been to Germany before, I found exploring the city of Hamburg was very educational for me and overall, I’m very glad I decided to go on the trip.”
