PhD researcher, Georgie Brighouse, presents at Leipzig's 26th International Network for Philosophy and Psychiatry Conference

Published on

Georgie Brighouse is a first year PhD researcher and double graduate from University of Liverpool. Her doctoral thesis, supervised by Dr Laura Gow, is called: 'Investigating aphantasia and how capacities for visual imagery can affect individuals in a mental health setting'. Georgie recently had an abstract accepted for the 26th International Network for Philosophy and Psychiatry Conference, this year held in Leipzig, Germany. Here she reflects on her first international conference.

"This was an experience that proved to be both personally and professionally enriching. I discovered the call for papers just days before the deadline, but since the application required a short (150-300 word) abstract and an academic CV, both of which I had ready, I was able to apply without too much stress. A small mishap with the early bird registration (I misread the deadline and missed the link) nearly cost me the discounted rate, but a polite email revealed it was actually an error on their part - so the link was reinstated, and I was reminded that it always pays to ask! The conference itself was an incredible experience: I received valuable feedback on my presentation, made connections with professionals and peers from around the world, and left with plenty of new ideas and insights! On a more personal level, with it being my first solo trip abroad, it was initially nerve-wracking but turned out to be an exhilarating experience, one which has certainly boosted my confidence in myself! It was a truly illuminating trip, and I would wholeheartedly encourage other PGR students to take the leap and apply to opportunities like this - even if it is last minute!"
