Pathways to Medicine
Pathways to Medicine is a 2-year project that is delivered in partnership with the School of Medicine, the Sutton Trust and the University’s Widening Participation and Outreach Team.
This project provides academic and industry-specific support for students who are interested in pursuing a career in Medicine.
The project aims to inspire and support students to progress onto Medicine at university, and then onto a range of careers in Medicine. During the project, participants will have the opportunity to explore the varied career pathways in the medical field.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Attend University taster sessions on campus
- Take part in a work experience placement in the medical field
- Meet staff and students from the University of Liverpool’s School of Medicine
- Receive information, advice and guidance about Higher Education, including UCAS and Student Finance
- Attend a summer school at the University of Liverpool
- Receive academic support, including mentoring during Year 13.
Eligibility
Students must:
- Attend, and have always attended, a state-funded, non-fee-paying school or college
- Be a current Year 12 student at the point of application
- Meet our GCSE eligibility criteria to study Medicine at University of Liverpool (please see below)
- Be studying A-level Chemistry, together with either Biology, Physics or Mathematics and a third academic subject.
- Be able to commute to University of Liverpool.
Students should meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Parents have not attended University
- Have been in receipt of or eligible for Free School Meals while at secondary school
- Attend a school or college with below-average A-level or Higher point score and/or a low rate of progression to higher education
- Live in a neighbourhood with a low rate of progression to higher education and/or a high level of socio-economic deprivation
- Have been looked after or been in care - if you are (or have been) looked after, accommodated or in care, you only need to meet the age, school and academic requirements
Whilst you must only meet one of these criteria to be eligible, please note that the more criteria you meet, the more likely you are to secure a place.
You don’t need to meet all the criteria to be eligible.
There is room on the application form and teacher verification form to explain any extenuating circumstances that might impact your application.

Students can apply to Pathways to Medicine via the Sutton Trust website.
GCSE Criteria
- 9 GCSEs attained by the end of Year 11, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry (or Core & Additional Science, combined or triple science) at minimum Grade B/6.
- A minimum score of 15 points from the best 9 GCSEs or equivalents (where A*/A/9/8/7 = 2 points and B/6 = 1 point). BTEC (Non-Science) Level 2 and OCR awards at Distinction*/Distinction = 2 point. BTEC (Non-Science) Level 2 and OCR awards at Merit = 1 point.
- Two points is the maximum score awarded in each subject area (e.g. only of of Maths and Further Maths).
- No more than two Level 2 BTEC qualifications or OCR awards will be considered as part of the 9 GCSEs/equivalent. These cannot be used as replacements for English Language, Maths and Science subjects i.e. a minimum of 7 full GCSEs requirements
