The Salters' Fellowship

The University of Liverpool and the Worshipful Company of Salters are delighted to offer the Salters’ Fellowship, to support a postgraduate student with a background in Chemistry to pursue postgraduate education. The scholarship will support students from socio-economically underrepresented backgrounds.
The Worshipful Company of Salters has its origins in the salt trade of medieval London, as one of the Great 12 Livery Companies. Today, The Salters’ Company is a diverse organisation, responsible for several charitable foundations, important philanthropic work in science education and the fostering of fellowship among its members. The Salters’ Company is dedicated to excellence in chemistry education, civic life and charitable giving.
The award
The Salters’ Fellowship is comprised of a generous donation by the Worshipful Company of Salters, match funded by the University of Liverpool School of Physical Sciences.
The award is a £10,000 contribution to tuition fees, available for one student in the 2025/26 academic year.
The successful student will also receive support from the Worshipful Company of Salters throughout their studies and beyond, to help them gain their desired employment upon graduation from their postgraduate studies and with their subsequent career development.
You can combine this scholarship with other applicable University of Liverpool widening participation bursaries.
Eligibility criteria
Please check your eligibility before making an application for this scholarship. Awards may be withdrawn if we later become aware that successful students have not met the eligibility criteria or have provided false information.
Applicants must meet all of the below criteria:
- Be permanently resident in the UK
- Have graduated from an undergraduate degree in Chemistry. This includes chemical engineering and biochemistry degrees
- Have accepted a place at the University of Liverpool on an eligible postgraduate course, to commence study in the 2025/26 academic year. Eligible postgraduate courses are one year taught masters’ degrees in a complementary subject. Please see below for information on what qualifies as a complementary subject
- This must be your first postgraduate degree and you must not already hold an equivalent qualification
- You must have made an application to Student Finance England (or equivalent body) for a Postgraduate Masters’ Loan
- You must have been assessed for fee status as a ‘Home’ student, or expect to be assessed as a ‘Home’ student
- Have been considered a student from a widening participation background during your undergraduate degree. Please see below for information on what qualifies as a widening participation background.
Complementary subjects
For the purposes of the Salters’ Fellowship, a complementary subject is defined as a taught master's in one of the following subject areas:
- Engineering, including chemical, electrical, mechanical, civil etc
- Computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning
- Business management, economics and related subject areas
- Accountancy and finance and related subject areas
- Law and related subject areas
- Nanoscience/technology
- Data management
- Modern languages and related subject areas.
Widening participation background
For the purposes of the Salters’ Fellowship, we'll define a widening participation student as a student who met at least one of the below criteria during their undergraduate degree:
- Participated in a University supported access scheme. At the University of Liverpool this would have included the Liverpool Scholars scheme, Pathways to Law, Pathways to Banking and Finance, Pathways to Engineering or Realising Opportunities. Different universities offer different schemes. If you're unsure if you meet this criteria, please contact wpscholarships@liverpool.ac.uk
- Have been in receipt of or entitled to discretionary payments/16-19 bursary/pupil premium/free school meals while as school or college
- Have received a contextual offer from the University where you studied your undergraduate degree
- Fall into one of the following student groups: Care experienced, estranged, young adult carer, refugee, asylum seeker
- Have received widening participation bursaries or grants for students from low income backgrounds, eg The Liverpool Bursary
- Come from a home where neither parent attended university in the UK or abroad.

The application process
Personal statement
To help us to get to know you, we'll ask you for a personal statement of 4,000 characters explaining:
- Why the scholarship would be beneficial to your studies
- How it would help you to achieve your academic and career goals
- How your education would be of future benefit to your community and/or society
- What achievements, academically and personally, are you most proud of? This could include overcoming a challenging personal circumstance. There is no right or wrong answer. We're keen to hear your personal story.

Applications are open now via our online application form.
The deadline to submit your application is 5pm on the 24 October 2025.
Decisions
A panel of representatives from the University of Liverpool will assess applications before making a final decision, in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Salters.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in November 2025.
