Eligibility
This scholarship is intended to support international students who have recognised status as either refugees or under humanitarian protection under the 1951 Refugee Convention. This status must be held outside of the UK. It is also open to Ukrainian Nationals with European Union temporary protected status and who are currently living in an EU state and who would be eligible to apply for a student visa to come to the UK.
We hope to encourage well-qualified students to continue their education with us here in Liverpool studying a postgraduate taught course (MA or MSc). Please note - Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Nursing and other clinical courses are excluded.
All applicants for this scholarship must:
- Be able to evidence their Refugee Status, or Humanitarian Protection as recognised by the 1951 UN Convention on the Status of Refugees. For Ukrainians with European Union temporary protected status, relevant documentation which evidences this includes a residency card for the EU state you are in or a residency extension letter to March 2025. Alternatively, Palestinians who are registered as refugees with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) can provide evidence of this.
- Have applied to study for either an MA or MSc degree at the University of Liverpool.
Applications
To apply for the Humanitarian Scholarship, please follow the steps below. If you are unsure at any point, please contact the scholarship team on wpscholarships@liverpool.ac.uk before proceeding.
Step 1 - Apply for your course
Your first step is to apply for your course of study at the University of Liverpool. Please make sure you are applying for a one-year-long, postgraduate taught programme.
You will apply for your course online, please make sure you complete your application fully and include your full education history.
You must have submitted your application to study by 31 January 2026 to be considered for the scholarship. If you apply after this date, it is unlikely that you will have received your offer and managed to fulfil any conditions, in time to apply for the scholarship.
Step 2 – Receiving an offer
Our Admissions team will carefully assess your application to see if they are able to make you an offer to study. There are two kinds of offers you might receive:
- A conditional offer, where you are required to complete some additional steps before the University can admit you to study. Go to Step 3.
- An unconditional offer, where you are not required to do anything additional. Go to Step 4.
Step 3 – Fulfilling the terms of your conditional offer
If you are made a conditional offer, you need to work on meeting any conditions as soon as you receive the offer.
Your conditional offer might include providing proof of previous qualifications, or achieving a specified level of English Language proficiency.
The University will accept Duolingo to meet any English Language requirements, which is a cheaper and more accessible option. You’ll need a laptop, reliable internet connection and a private space to take the test.
We have a very limited number of vouchers for Duolingo tests, which we can provide in circumstances where students have compelling financial circumstances. Please contact us via wpscholarships@liverpool.ac.uk to discuss.
You must have met the terms of your conditional offer before moving onto Step 4.
Step 4 – Apply for the scholarship
Applications for the scholarship will open on 15 March 2026 and close on 1 May 2026.
Applications are made via our online application form, which will be available on this page from 1 April 2026. Please make sure your application is fully completed.
As part of your application, you will need to email proof of your status as a refugee or a person under Humanitarian Protection. Instructions on how to do this are included in the form, please not we cannot consider any applications where the candidate has not provided this proof.
Please do not complete the scholarship application unless you have received either an unconditional offer, or a conditional offer which you have now fulfilled; applicants who are not unconditional, or who have not met the terms of their offer will not be considered.
Due to the extremely high volume of applications we receive, we cannot acknowledge receipt of your application.
Decisions
A panel of staff from across the University will assess all scholarship applications, and the successful applicant will be informed in mid-June 2026. Whilst we endeavour to inform you of the outcome of your application, this is not guaranteed. If you haven’t heard from us by 1 August 2026, please assume your application has not been successful.
Please note:
- You need a Student Visa to study in the UK, and we will only be able to award you the scholarship subject to you successfully applying for and receiving a Student Visa.
- During the visa application process you will incur up front costs, including a £524 application fee and £776 immigration healthcare surcharge. You will need to be able to pay these costs up front – we will reimburse you following your arrival in the UK.
- We will provide your transport from your current location to the University, it is your responsibility to make sure you have appropriate transit visas, if needed.
- We will ensure you have accommodation in University halls, the cost of which will be taken from your stipend. The remainder of the stipend will be paid to you directly for your living costs.
- Your stipend can only be paid into a UK Bank Account, which you will need to set up on arrival into the UK. As such, you will need to be able to cover your costs during your first two or three weeks in the UK. If you would struggle to do this, we can provide vouchers for food, clothing and other incidentals.
