Amsterdam, the most populous and capital city of the Netherlands, is located in the province of North Holland. It has an oceanic climate with cool winters and mild summers, with precipitation constant throughout the year. Amsterdam is the cultural capital of the country and one of the top financial centres in Europe. Golden Age canals lined by tilting gabled buildings are the backdrop for Amsterdam’s treasure-packed museums, vintage-filled shops and hyper-creative design, socialising and dining scenes.

University Information

Founded in 1880, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Free University Amsterdam) is a research-intensive university attended by a wide variety of students of diverse backgrounds. It is ranked the 218th best university globally and 12th best nationally, according the QS World University Rankings. Currently just under 24,000 students and 3,000 academic staff members are situated the university. The university houses several interdisciplinary research institutes and within the last five years the European Research Council awarded two starting grants and six advanced grants to VU researchers.
