City Information

Located in the southeast of the Netherlands, Maastricht is the capital and largest city of the province of Limburg. Maastricht has a population of just over 120,000 and has a large English speaking student population. The city is famous for being the birthplace of the European Union - in 1992 the Maastricht Treaty was signed there, bringing about the creation of the EU and the Euro.

University Information

Established in 1976 due to a shortage of medical professional, the Maastricht University is the second youngest Dutch university. It is ranked within the top 300 universities worldwide according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Currently the university takes just under 17,000 students, of which over half are foreign, and around 2,000 academic staff members. It is part of the World Universities Network as the network’s first and only Dutch university. The network offers a platform for education and transnational research projects of global importance.
