Digital Education Advisory Group
The Digital Education Advisory Group (DEAG) has been stood down as of 31/7/25 and will be replaced by a new group aligned to Curriculum 2027. DEAG provided leadership, expert advice, recommendations, strategic insights and the prioritisation of change to the University of Liverpool's Digital Education ecosystem and its stakeholders across all teaching and learning activity (whether primarily on-campus or online provision).
The objectives of the DEAG were to:
- Ensure quality, inclusivity and accessibility in digital education across all university provision
- Develop staff and student capability via engagement and training in digital education
- Review and recommend digital education university policies, guidelines and processes
- Ensure that digital learning and teaching activity is integrated and aligned to the Liverpool Curriculum Framework and wider Education Strategy including student experience and engagement
- Provide expert advice on digital education technologies, platforms, and best practices related to learning, teaching and assessment
- Develop, support, monitor and assess the effectiveness of digital education initiatives and strategic priorities, via identifying issues and risks, proposing solutions and improvements
- Evaluate and recommend digital education technologies and platforms, and suggest prioritisation via a Digital Education Roadmap1
- Endorse the Digital Education Roadmap, as part of the yearly academic planning cycle
- Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in digital education, in order to report and seek support for these via the Education Leadership Team and Education Committee, as relevant.
Our values
The Advisory Group held the values of being inclusive, student-centred, led by evidence-based, ethical, pedagogic considerations (student learning being the priority, not the technology itself) and in alignment with our sustainability strategy. The Group provided a safe space for its members to openly discuss experiences and put forward opinions without judgement or prejudice, whilst recognising the need to compromise.
Our focus and scope
The focus was on our digital education experience for every UoL student (whether primarily on-campus or online). The scope of the group included:
- Ecosystem of digital education platforms: Prioritise and oversee the Digital Education Roadmap for planned innovation and change. Evaluate existing and emerging digital education technologies for piloting, adoption, identifying best practices and monitoring
- Curriculum Embedding: Oversee the embedding and integration of digital pedagogies into the curriculum in alignment with our Liverpool Curriculum Framework
- Staff & Student Engagement and Training: Devise effective strategies for developing the digital fluency of staff and students
- Inclusivity and Accessibility: Ensure that our learning environment is equitable as far as is reasonable
- Student Experience: Evaluate and improve the student and staff experience in digital learning environments
- Evolving Our Approach: Capture experience from the activity and expertise distributed across the University, including the Liverpool Online Partnership, in order to develop best practice across the total provision.
Who are we?
The core membership of the Advisory Group was drawn from across the University including academic, student, and professional services representatives:
In addition to the ‘normal’ business meetings of the Advisory Group, Working and/or Task-and-Finish Groups were established so that progress could be made in line with the current strategic priorities and objectives of the Group. For the year of 2024/25, five Working Groups progressed the work of the Canvas Advisory Group and our strategic vision around innovations in education:
- Staff and student engagement and training – Lead: Joel Haddley
- Inclusivity and accessibility – Lead: Ben McGrae
- Canvas API/Innovation – Lead: David Jones
- Generative Artificial Intelligence – Lead: Rob Lindsay
- Immersive Technology – Lead: Will Moindrot & Dave Webster.
Membership of these Working Groups and Task-and-Finish Groups comprised DEAG members, who also co-opted other members outside DEAG to support their work. Group leads were assigned from the membership of DEAG and groups arrange their own meetings and provided updates on progress at the business meetings of DEAG.
