David has over 20 years’ experience in higher education, with a particular focus on Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship Education, Executive Education and Management Development. His scholarship is closely aligned with his teaching approach, exploring innovative and practice-based approaches to entrepreneurship and management education, including action learning, dialogic and performative pedagogies, reflexive learning and the relationship between theory and practice. David has published across a range of scholarly publications, including academic books, journal articles, book chapters and conference contributions, with his work contributing to ongoing debates around entrepreneurship education, learning through action, pedagogy and management education. His scholarship has appeared in a range of established international journals, and he has also contributed to the development of the field through editorial and scholarly community roles. He has served as a guest editor for international journals and is currently an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Management Education. He was previously Editor of the Journal of Action Learning: Research and Practice, providing further evidence of his commitment to action-oriented and practice-based scholarship.
A significant element of David’s academic practice is his contribution to doctoral education and supervision. Doctoral supervision is a core component of his academic role, and he has extensive experience supervising doctoral researchers across PhD and DBA programmes. He has supported and supervised many doctoral completions, working with practiced focused researchers across a range of entrepreneurship, management and education-related topics. His supervisory approach reflects his wider pedagogical philosophy, emphasising dialogue, reflexivity, critical inquiry and the development of independent scholarly judgement. He seeks to support doctoral researchers not only in completing their research projects, but in developing their identity and confidence as independent scholars and contributing members of academic and professional communities. David also contributes actively to the wider development of the scholarly community. He currently serves as a Board Member of the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB) and holds a role within the British Academy of Management Research Methods Special Interest Group. He is also Track Chair for the Research Methods, Practice and Inquiry/Impact (RMPI) track and has developed and delivered professional development activities for doctoral researchers, academics and practitioners, including at PhD and DBA levels.
Alongside his scholarly and supervisory work, David has secured competitive research support, including ESRC-funded awards, and has extensive experience developing academic and professional learning communities. His current academic profile therefore brings together research, doctoral supervision, editorial leadership, teaching and scholarly community engagement, reflecting a sustained commitment to advancing entrepreneurship and management education through innovative, critically engaged and practice-informed scholarship.
