Research Centre in Mathematics and Modelling

The Research Centre in Mathematics and Modelling (RCMM) provides a focus for attracting external funding to support interdisciplinary modelling projects and to promote and support research activities which require significant mathematical involvement.

The philosophy of the RCMM is to develop highly interdisciplinary mathematical modelling activity in challenging research projects across the University.

The department of Mathematical Sciences has an excellent track record of interdisciplinary research involving mathematicians and experts from other academic disciplines across the University of Liverpool. Members of the department have established an enviable international research profile by publishing original results in prestigious international journals, by writing research monographs attracting attention of worldwide research communities, by organising quality research conferences and workshops and developing international research networks with colleagues from other universities, industrial partners and research institutes across the globe.

Aims and objectives

The Research Centre in Mathematics and Modelling (RCMM) acts as a forum and as a management tool for the initiation and coordination of interdisciplinary modelling projects based at the University of Liverpool. RCMM activities are combined with a sustained programme of externally funded projects. In recent years the department of Mathematical Sciences has enjoyed a substantial increase in the amount of research grant funding from UK Research Councils and the European Commission.

RCMM provides a focus for attracting external funding to support interdisciplinary modelling projects and promotes and supports research activities which require significant mathematical involvement. The centre promotes the following activities and provides assistance and advice in the search for appropriate follow-on funding:

  • Visitor programmes for researchers and academic instructors
  • Interdisciplinary seminar series and research workshops
  • Interdisciplinary collaborative projects leading to new applications for external research funding
  • Identification, advice and engagement in responses to multidisciplinary research opportunities that involve mathematical modelling.

The RCMM is managed by the Director, Professor Movchan and the Research Committee, Chair: Dr KJ Sharkey, with representation from all the research clusters in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The Research Committee and Director are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the RCMM. Proposals for RCMM funding are reviewed and approved by the Research Committee.
