About

Claire Mallanaphy is Deputy Dean (Education and Student Experience) at the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS), where she provides strategic leadership across the School’s education portfolio and is a key member of the ULMS Management Committee. In this role, she leads institutional priorities relating to programme quality, student outcomes, and the School’s position within the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), advising senior stakeholders on performance, enhancement, and long term strategic direction.

Since joining ULMS in 2009, Claire has held a series of senior academic and leadership positions, including Director of Studies for the BA Accounting and Finance programme and Associate Head of the Economics, Finance and Accounting group. Across these roles she has contributed to programme innovation, curriculum transformation, and the professional development of colleagues.

A Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA), Claire began her career with Grant Thornton before transitioning into higher education. She retains strong links with the professional accounting sector: she serves as an assessor for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and contributes to quality assurance for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). She was an elected member of the British Academy of Management (BAM) Council and sat on BAM’s Management, Knowledge and Education Committee.

Claire’s research focuses on the career trajectories and development pathways of education focused academics. She has authored a widely cited white paper on this topic and is regularly invited to speak at universities and sector conferences in the UK and internationally.

Her broader academic interests include learning, teaching, and the student experience. She is a recipient of both the Sir Alastair Pilkington Award and the Faculty Learning and Teaching Award, recognising her sustained contribution to educational excellence. She has extensive experience in programme and module development, particularly in her specialist field of Financial Reporting.

Claire is also committed to enhancing student employability and graduate success. She works closely with a range of UK and global professional services firms to strengthen employer engagement and create high impact opportunities for students.

Beyond the University, she contributes actively to the wider higher education and professional community, including through engagement with professional accountancy bodies, Chartered ABS networks, and the British Academy of Management. Claire was a member of the ICAEW Academia and Education Committee for several years and still is an invited guest speaker for them and similar communities.
