We are part of a Russell Group research-intensive, internationally respected institution, which is based in the culturally vibrant city of Liverpool, with its rich history of involvement in a range of diverse activities, including music and the arts and with lower living costs when compared to London.
To ‘make a difference’ by contributing positively to the future of education locally, nationally, and globally through a community of academics, students and interested parties who will critically examine the theory and practice of education wherever and whenever it is undertaken.
Professor Alison Fell, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences:
I’m delighted that we are launching a new University of Liverpool Institute of Education under Anthony Edwards’ leadership as Director. The Institute will be building on strong foundations but equally has the potential to increase its activity and national and global impact in the years ahead. Digital and other transformations in primary, secondary and higher education settings mean that education is an exciting and increasingly important research area, and the new MA is an excellent opportunity for education professionals looking for career development opportunities as well as undergraduate students interested in future careers in the education sector.
Dr Anthony Edwards, Head of the Institute of Education:
The University of Liverpool Institute of Education is an interdisciplinary community of academics and students who, through scholarly activity and research, seek to understand the practice, the theory and the transformative capacities of education in all its forms. Founded on a rich tradition of academic rigour, and with a commitment to social justice and inclusion, our Institute is dedicated to contributing positively to the future of education locally, nationally, and globally. Our researchers and students are drawn from a broad range of international and disciplinary backgrounds, and you will find a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment at the Institute of Education. Join us as we help to empower educators and transform lives through learning.
Dr Martin Gough, Academic at the Institute of Education:
I am very pleased to be a member of the community of scholars who will form the new University of Liverpool Institute of Education, which aims to foster innovative and creative thinking with regard to Education. As one of the academics originally engaged in doctoral supervision on the Doctor of Education programme, which has supported over 200 higher education professionals to graduate, and who also supervises on other PhD programmes, I welcome this development. It’s also refreshing to be part of the wider multi-disciplinary team that includes lecturers with academic backgrounds in Digital Technologies and in Business and Management Studies who helped to design and will deliver the MA in Education programme. Underpinned by the collective research supervision expertise of the whole team, the programme prepares students to develop their own ideas related to education and to design systematic enquiries around them.
Dr Deb Outhwaite, Academic at the Institute of Education:
I am delighted to be a member of the new University of Liverpool Institute of Education, which aims to foster innovative and creative thinking in Education. As one of the academics engaged in doctoral supervision on the Doctor of Education programme since 2017, which has supported over 200 higher education professionals to graduate and as someone who also regularly examines on other PhD programmes, both in UK HEIs, and in Canada and the US, I wholeheartedly welcome this development.
It’s great to be in an interdisciplinary team that includes a range of staff with academic backgrounds in education from Digital Technologies; Business, Management and Leadership and Philosophy who co-designed and will co-deliver our MA in Education programme. Underpinned by our joint expertise in supervision; publications; and wider engagement with 'the academy' through our involvement in learned societies (conferences and papers that help prepare students to develop their own ideas), we are well placed to continue to grow postgraduate provision in Education at the University of Liverpool Institute of Education.
