Methods North West lunchtime sessions

University of Liverpool are a research and methods collaborator with five other institutions across the North West of England. Weekly opportunities for more informal discussions around methodological innovation and development are available through the Methods North West Lunchtime Sessions.

Engage@Liverpool facilitates University of Liverpool contributions to the online MNW Methods Lunchtime Sessions series.

National Centre for Research Methods

As a National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) Centre Partner, the University of Liverpool contributes to a range of short courses and online resources.

Recurring short courses via NCRM Liverpool include Participatory Action Research, Qualitative Diary Methods, Creative Ethnographies and Oral History Theory. Details of all NCRM upcoming courses, including the engage@Liverpool contributions, can be found on the NCRM Training Catalogue.

Methodological Innovation and Development Award Scheme (MIDAS)

Proposals are invited from University of Liverpool academics and postgraduate researchers for methodological innovation and development funding through engage@liverpool via its Methodological Innovation and Development Awards Scheme (MIDAS). 

MIDAS support activity in three areas:

  1. Research-focused workshops/events emphasising methodological and intellectual innovation
  2. Practice- or impact-focused workshops/events seeking to engage people, communities and organisations
  3. Short-course and advanced methods training workshop development.

With a rolling deadline throughout the academic year and up to £500 available to support with these opportunities, engage@Liverpool are keen to hear more about the research you are doing and supporting it where we can.

Methods North West: Methods Labs

Methods North West: Methods Labs offer opportunities for postgraduate and academic researchers to come together to work intensively for a concentrated period around methods or methodologies. Normally running for half or full days, the Methods Labs format is dynamic and flexible, and Methods North West will support those delivering the Labs to ensure they are configured effectively as well as providing funding.

With a rolling deadline throughout the academic year and up to £2000 available to support with these opportunities, engage@Liverpool is keen to hear more about the research you are doing and supporting it where we can.

Methods North West: Catalyst Grants

Methods North West has set aside a fund for collaborative projects events, initiatives, workshops and symposia to support cutting-edge developments in research methods across the North West. Catalyst Grants are intended to support creative proposals that speak across disciplinary pathways and research fields and that evidence how the NWSSDTP is taking a lead in the application of cutting-edge methodology regionally, nationally and internationally.

With deadlines across term one and term two with up to £6000 to support with these opportunities a successful proposal much be genuinely collaborative, persuasively innovative and meaningfully inclusive of postgraduate research students and their development.

Funding opportunities for current and future research leaders across the social sciences, arts and humanities

Below are a series of calls for current and future research leaders in the social sciences, arts and humanities to shape national training that the next generation of researchers will receive. These calls are relevant to those working to advance existing methodologies as well as those engaged in methodological innovation. We would encourage all those who are interested in applying for these opportunities to email engage@liverpool.ac.uk with a few lines setting out what you are proposing in order to receive feedback and advice. With a team spanning the three faculties, we are in a position to help you develop proposals to access this funding and the platforms they provide.

 

The UKRI Research Capability Hub's Flexible Fund: up to £10k, deadline 27 September 2026, 4:00pm

The Research Capability Hub's Flexible Fund is available to develop openly accessible online training that strengthens research capability in one of three areas: Participatory Research Methods; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Research; Working Across Disciplines.

While primarily aimed at social scientists, these are cross-cutting areas and broader SHAPE or STEM proposals are welcome.

 

National Centre for Research Methods: Commissioning State-of-the-Art Research Training in Established and Emerging Areas rolling, no deadline

The National Centre for Research Methods is seeking to support leading researchers to take their methodological expertise to the wider research community by commissioning them to develop short courses and online materials. As an NCRM Centre Partner, the University of Liverpool has the capacity to pay academics for producing and delivering new NCRM material. If you are interested in communicating your approach to a national and indeed international audience, whether that be the development of techniques for using AI and the digital in research or approaches to working with people, texts, numbers, the visual and more, the NCRM can support you to do that.

 

Methods North West Catalyst Grants: up to £6k Term 1 closing date Monday 4 January 2027 at midnight; Term 2 closing date for applications is Monday 7 June 2027 at midnight

Methods North West supports collaborations between researchers in the North West - principally Keele, Lancashire, Lancaster and Manchester alongside Liverpool - to work with PGRs on established and emerging research approaches, methodologies and methods through focused research events. Support is available to colleagues through engage@liverpool to develop Catalyst Grant proposals.

Methods North West also supports academic and postgraduate researchers to develop research events within their own institutions - its Methods Lab funding stream will fund activity up to £2k. Support is again available to colleagues through engage@liverpool to develop Methods Lab proposals.

Finally, for those wishing to test ideas or initiate a conversation ahead of seeking further funding, Methods North West runs a Methods Seminar series designed to create a platform for promoting and discussing research approaches, methodologies and methods.
