Dr Joseph Wolfenden
Institution: University of Liverpool
Role: EDI Co-ordinator
I graduated from the University of Manchester with a Master’s degree in Physics in 2014 and, following a year in industry as a
technical and management consultant, joined the QUASAR Group at the University of Liverpool to pursue a PhD based at the Cockcroft Institute. My doctoral research focused on the development of novel beam diagnostics using optical and THz radiation, with experimental work carried out at leading international facilities including KEK (Japan), Diamond Light Source (UK), and MAX IV (Sweden).
After completing my PhD in 2019, I became a Research Associate and later Senior Researcher within the group. My work now focuses on advanced beam instrumentation for frontier accelerator facilities such as the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN and the European Plasma Research Accelerator with Excellence in Applications (EuPRAXIA). I am particularly interested in integrating artificial intelligence into data analysis and accelerator control systems.
Alongside my academic work, I serve as Director of D-Beam Ltd, a University of Liverpool spin-out company that commercialises accelerator diagnostic technologies. I am also AWAKE Deputy Team Leader for the University of Liverpool and Work Package Deputy Leader for “Facility Design and Optimization” within the EuPRAXIA Doctoral Network.
As Equality and Diversity Lead for the LIV.INNO Centre for Doctoral Training, I am committed to fostering an inclusive research environment and supporting the next generation of scientists. My broader interests include research translation, innovation in experimental methods, and the development of collaborative links between academia and industry.
