Emerging Therapeutic Modalities

Code: BIOS315

Credits: 15

Semester: Semester 1

The traditional view of medicines as primarily small molecules and chemical entities is somewhat dated. In recent years, there has been a rapid expansion of emerging therapeutic modalities, including nucleic acid medicines, gene and cell therapies, engineered protein degraders, nanomedicines, and long-acting formulations. Stakeholders across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors have highlighted the importance of equipping graduates with knowledge and expertise in these evolving therapeutic approaches.

This module will introduce these emerging modalities and explores their mechanism of action and development challenges. It also examines enabling drug delivery strategies, including long-acting and nano-formulations.

The module includes research-connected lectures, seminars and workshops delivered by research-active academics. Module assessment comprises the production of an infographic and a written examination.
